What are thermal curtains?

Thermal curtains work by creating an additional layer in the curtain lining to create a thicker weave that helps regulate the temperature in your room. The thicker and heavier weave in the fabric helps to trap air at your windows to aid heat retention during colder months while helping keep your room cooler in the hotter months. Thermal curtains also offer a limited sound dampening, with the thicker fabric helping to absorb some noise from outside.

Are thermal curtains the same as blackout?

The primary benefit of thermal curtains is the temperature regulating feature to help keep your room comfortable all year round. While the heavier and thicker weave can reduce the amount of light entering the room, thermal curtains do not work as effectively as blackout curtains in this respect. Blackout curtains are a good all-rounder for light control and temperature regulation, but thermal curtains are ideal in most rooms of the home where light control isn’t as important.

Where to use thermal curtains

Thermal curtains suit almost any room of the home, bringing heat regulating properties to key rooms, especially in older and draughty homes. In living rooms and dining rooms, thermal curtains can provide comfort all year round without the need for full blackout. Conservatories are notorious for losing heat in the winter and overheating in the summer and thermal curtains can help better regulate the temperature. Bedrooms are the key room where blackout curtains are the natural choice to bring both temperature regulating and blackout qualities for better sleeping conditions.

If you already have regular lined curtains and wish to make the most of a thermal effect without having to invest in a new pair of curtains, curtain linings are available separately for both eyelet and pencil pleat curtains. They simply attach to the back of your curtains to bring the thermal effect to your room.
